Joao Barbosa lives in Porto, Portugal, where he was born and raised. He experienced his first successes playing low-stakes Limit Hold ‘em and small buy-in tournaments. As his bankroll increased, he switched to No-Limit Hold ‘em and concentrated his efforts on improving his game by reading poker books, watching videos and dedicating many hours to practice. After earning a degree in computer engineering, Joao decided to play poker full time.

While Joao’s only been on the tournament circuit since 2008, he’s already posted impressive results. Beginning that May, he opened with a strong performance in Madrid, taking 1st place in a €1.5K No-Limit Hold 'em event where he earned over €115K in prize money. He followed this with a deep run and cash finish in the EPT £5.2K No-Limit Hold ‘em Main Event in London, before heading to Poland for yet another EPT event. Once there, Joao played his way through a starting field of over 200 competitors in the EPT Polish Open’s €5.4K No-Limit Hold ‘em event to claim another 1st place finish as well as €367K.

Following a string of cashes in 2009, Joao won the 2010 EPT Sane Remo €2K No Limit Hold ‘em event for a first prize of €275,000. The win pushed Joao’s total career tournaments winnings beyond $1 million.
